Storyboards Miss Georgiou

Storyboards
The purpose of a storyboard is to give a guide which shows the shots needed to be filmed. The storyboards allow the production team to see how well the planned shots and other element will work once put together, it allows them to see if any shots dont fit in well or even add other shots where needed. The storyboards allow the team to place all of the planned elements togeher so that when it comes to filming it wll run smoother and with be finished quicker because everthing will be in place. Eahc frame explain the loctaion, camera shot, iconpgraphy, editing, actors and includes a narrative description, having all this infomation easily accessed means that each shot can follow the intended look.
When carrying oout the research for my music video both types were used primary and secondary. The primary research carried out was a questionnaire and vox pops. These primary techniques helped me when it came to creating my own music video because they allowed me too gain a personal understand of what my target audience may want ot se or expect to see in my soul music video. The questionnaire allowed me to see whta my target audience want and what would be most effective to use in my music video, for example, the audience answer that they expect to see unique setting in a soul music video. Due to this result i thought it ould be effective to use a different setting which isnt popular in other music videos and it would make them ost intrigued into the video. The secondary research carried out was mostly just looking into the different aspects of a music video, the different theories, genres, artists, styles and the conventions. I looked into these elements by using the internent to find out infomation and watching other music videos. By looking into these things ment that I could understand how these different elemetns could create and effective and emotional music video. It helped me decide what I wanted in my own product. For example, my research into the style of a music video and Goodwins theory made me realise that I wanted to include a narrative and peformance style to my work, this is because I believed that it would work with my song, Amy Winehouse 'in my bed'. The narrative worked well because it could show the story to the song, meaning the audience could relate the musc and the artist thought her messages.

My group and I created our storyboard by putting of all our planning onto the paper which had different frames and boxes of the informations needed to describe to the shot. Th images below show the layout of the storyboard and how we wrote the elements needed for each shot. We put editing, camera shot, actors, sound, iconography, lighting, duration and a narrative description on the pages to show in as much detail as possible, how each shot should look and flow. We created our storyboard by spending a few lesson sitting and analysing the lyrics and discussing what scene we want to go where. From this we then went on to decided on what shot we would use within each scene and what other elements or assets would need to be in each shot. We carried on planning out each shot until we reached the end of the song and managed to get the timing right.

The group and I shared the responsibility by choosing a different member to cover different as of the storyboarding process. As a group we all discussed and wrote down the written work together so that we were able to plan how we wanted each shot to look and what should be included. After we finished the information section of the shots Emma then sketched out the shots in the boxes above the text, we decided emma would be best to do this part as she is good at drawing and was able to give a clearer picture for the frames. We also had to get the filming schedule down around the same time, so as Emma and Cara start on that I continued with the last shots of the storyboards so that we could get it all done, whilst we all did our jobs we continued to discuss each element so that everything was agreed on as a group. We shared the responsibilities well and managed to make sure all group members had a say to what went into it.

When it came to filming we did mostly stick to our storyboards, but there were a few changes. Some camera angles didn't look there best or look how the group and I imagined. For example we firstly decided on an panning shot as the artist was walking past the river in the walk of shame scene, but when i came to filming it we didn't think created the look we wanted. So we changed it to a tracking shot so that the camera followed the artist as she walked along, this worked better and gave us the image we wanted. The tracking meant the audience could be closer to the artist and they didn't get distanced from her, we wanted them to be able to see her clearly for the whole shot instead of her getting further away which happened in the panning shot. there was also an issue with on of the angle we first decided to use which was a low angle. This shot was looking up at the artist and her friend whilst at the house party, but it didn't create the emotions we wanted it to, instead it made them seem powerful which was not effective or relevant. The group and I decided a high angle would dower better as it would show her instability more, so we changed it and the shot  came together a lot better. Both these changes meant that we could follow what was originally planned for the two shots, but in the end they looked better then they would have if we followed the storyboard. The changes made the shot effective and made the video flow smoothly. Even thought not all the storyboard frames were followed it was still extremely useful to have it allowed my group and I to visualise how we wanted the video to look before we even started filming, therefore making it easier to actually create. The storyboards gave us a guide to follow and t was mostly stuck to and even when changes were made it was no of the content in the shot but the camera shot itself.

  1. This post demonstrates a proficient understanding of why storyboards are essential to consider and why it is essential to do. You have made a start in describing the various inspirations that you gained from your research, but you need to be more specific with these points and relate to detailed examples, to ensure that you have demonstrated further planning techniques.
